Ion Exchangers & Plasticizers

In ion-selective electrodes, the ion exchanger is typically dispersed in a polymer matrix along with a plasticizer to form a homogeneous membrane. This membrane is then coated onto the surface of an electrode and acts as the sensing element. When the electrode is exposed to a sample containing the target ion, the ion exchanger selectively binds to the ion, generating an electrical potential that is measured by the electrode. The plasticizer helps to ensure that the membrane remains flexible and allows for efficient ion transport, enhancing the sensitivity and reliability of the sensor.
